Westlake is in the Top 500 Schools in the Nation! The Newsweek High School Rankings assess schools based on a broad range of data to determine which institutions do the best job of preparing students for college. In addition, rankings are based on SAT scores, graduation rates, college acceptance and readiness. Newsweek looked at data from over 15,000 schools and Westlake is among 6 schools in Westchester County that ranked top 500. Emma Schulze '17

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! With a new year comes a new face. Westlake welcomes Mr.Daniel Novak as he starts his journey as assistant principal. Mr. Daniel Novak an assistant principal and teacher from Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science and Engineering decided to take a chance and became Westlake High School's new assistant principal. At the first Presidential debate held at Hofstra University, Holt, a republican, remained neutral and did not ask any unjustified questions towards Mr. Trump or Secretary Clinton. Many Trump supporters were quick to claim that debate moderator Lester Holt was biased towards Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton. However, the new debate format was designed to be more of a conversation between two candidates and less of an interview with the moderator. Nick Rivello '16

Who won the debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump? Most say Hillary Clinton defeated Donald Trump at the first Presidential debate held at Hofstra University. Clinton appeared to be more prepared than Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States. A US Naval Officer did not stand while at Pearl Harbor for the National Anthem on September 19. Petty Officer 2nd Class Janaye Ervin decided not to stand for the national Anthem at Pearl Harbor, the site of the worst military tragedy in US history, a crime on its own. The officer is now under investigation by the US Navy. This comes after NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick protested the supposed mistreatment of African Americans by kneeling during the national anthem. Charlie Greco '18

More than 250,000 people lost their lives when anti-government protests rocketed up into a full scale civil war in Aleppo, Syria. The ongoing Syrian Civil war which began in 2012 has become detrimental to neighborhoods and civilians in Eastern Aleppo. In the news the total deaths since 2012 are approximately 400,000 deaths caused by violence,70,000 deaths because of the collapse of health and infrastructure and 1.8 million injuries. Big and special wedding proposals aren’t always perfect. As one young man gets on one knee at Yankee stadium to propose to his girlfriend, another places a the ring in a helium balloon for his fiancee to pop, while another accidentally let his ring get washed away by a wave. Republican Senators criticized FBI director James Comey for his agency's poor handling of recent terrorism incidents including a bombing in New York and a shooting in an Orlando nightclub. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says that the recent bombings are examples of “evolving” threats of terrorism and that terrorism has become less predictable since the 9/11 attacks. The Assad Regime and their Russian Ally have surrounded Aleppo bombarding the rebel stronghold, and it’s innocent civilians In an attempt to retake the city from the Syrian Rebels. America’s strongest symbol the bald eagle was trapped in the grill of car, after the devastation of Hurricane Matthew, in the Fleming Island area of Northern Florida. A witness at an intersection saw this eagle and originally thought the bird was just a prop. The witness signaled the driver down when they both discovered the distressed bird. Justin Arrichiello '17

Arnold Palmer the king of golf died at AGE 87. PALMER died Sunday September 25TH at a Pittsburgh hospital while awaiting cardiac surgery. Palmer is known for revolutionizing the sport of golf changing it from a country club pursuit to one everyone could play. Dan Grossman '18
